To provide input for site selection and the safety case for deep geological repositories for radioactive waste, Nagra has drilled a series of deep boreholes in Northern Switzerland. The aim of the drilling campaign is to characterise the deep underground of the three siting regions Jura Ost, Nördlich Lägern and Zürich Nordost.

The Bachs-1-1 exploratory borehole is the ninth (and last) borehole drilled within the framework of this project. The drill site is located in the western part of the Nördlich Lägern siting region.
