At an extraordinary general meeting, the members of the Nagra Cooperative unanimously decided to found two publicly limited companies. These new organisations will take over the construction and operation of the deep geological repository and the encapsulation plants, respectively. Both companies will be wholly owned subsidiaries of Nagra.
“We want to decouple the management and implementation of the deep geological repository from each other in organisational terms. This approach is similar to the Alptransit organisational model, which proved successful with the New Rail Link through the Alps,” explains Nagra CEO Matthias Braun, adding: “Nothing will change for our partners or in our collaboration with them. The deep geological repository for the radioactive waste will remain a Nagra project.”
Founding of the subsidiaries should be completed by mid-2024. The subsidiaries are expected to submit the respective general licence applications for the deep geological repository and the encapsulation plants this autumn. The subsidiaries will only become operationally active over the course of the next few years.
