Start of the 3D seismic measurements in the Jura Ost siting region

The 3D seismic measurements in the Jura Ost siting region started today, 1st October. The investigations are focusing on the underground environment around the Bözberg area.

The first measurements were carried out in the northeast of the region near Mandach / Villigen and will conclude in Densbüren in the southwest of the survey area.

«Seismic measurements are carried out routinely in different regions, from rural areas with intensive farming to densely populated areas. Carrying out the field work with the agreement of the local population is the key to a successful measurement campaign», explains Nagra project manager Marian Hertrich. In the coming months, measurements will be carried out six days a week (Monday to Saturday), from early in the morning into the evening. The aim is to complete the seismic survey of the around 100 square kilometre area in three months.

120 employees of the German company DMT, which is performing the measurements on behalf of Nagra, six vibrator vehicles, 150 km of cable and 60,000 geophones – highly sensitive measurement tools – will be involved in the 3D seismic campaign in the coming months. Support will be provided by a fleet of around 60 vehicles.
