Radioactive waste must be safely disposed of for up to one million years until it no longer poses a hazard. Is it even possible to find a safe solution for such an enormously long time? Nagra’s researchers believe that, yes, this can indeed be done. They rely on geology and on the fact that deep beneath the earth’s surface, time practically stands still.

But that does not mean it is easy: just like with climate change, scientific data alone are not sufficient to solve the problem. Politicians and society must also to be willing to tackle it. But who would want a deep geological repository in their backyard? And who should decide where it will be constructed? The electorate, or scientists? This question contains explosive material for discussion. Come and explore the complex topic of deep geological disposal. We are happy to help you.

Excursion to an underground rock laboratory

Come visit us at the Mont Terri Rock Laboratory with your class. Free guided tours last around 2.5 hours and can be conducted from Monday through Friday. We recommend booking an appointment well in advance.

Visit to the Grimsel Test Site

Workshops in the classroom

Would you like to cover the topic of radioactive waste disposal with your class? We would be pleased to bring our interactive workshop into your classroom and are available for discussion.

Please contact us well in advance.

Support for student work

Do you have questions regarding the disposal of radioactive waste? Do you need information or materials? Are you planning to write a paper on deep geological disposal or want to learn more about our research activities?

Please contact us well in advance.

We are happy to support you and are available for interviews.
