Radioactive waste must be safely contained for up to one million years. But is there even a solution that can remain safe for such a long time period?

Yes, there is a safe solution for our radioactive waste. Nagra’s researchers firmly believe that. They rely on geology and on the fact that deep beneath the earth’s surface, time practically stands still.

Open questions

But that does not mean it is easy: just like with climate change, scientific data alone are not sufficient to solve the problem. Politicians and society must also be willing to tackle it.

But, if you were to ask around, who would agree to have a deep geological repository in their backyard? And who decides where it will be constructed? The electorate, or scientists? These questions contain explosive material for discussion. Come and explore the complex topic of deep geological disposal. We would be happy to help you.

Excursion to an underground research laboratory

Take your class on a visit to the Grimsel Test Site or the Mont Terri Rock Laboratory. Free guided tours last around 2.5 hours and are available from Monday to Friday. We recommend booking an appointment well in advance.

The Grimsel Test Site has its own website.
