Collaboration and consulting
The Grimsel Test Site and Mont Terri Rock Laboratory provide important insights into the feasibility and long-term safety of deep geological repositories. Our strengths include planning, implementation and analysis of tests and experiments.
What’s new at Nagra?
Nagra proposes “Nördlich Lägern” as the site for a repository
Nördlich Lägern is the safest site for a deep geological repository: here, the rock deep below the surface best confines the radioactive waste for a very long time. Nagra’s investigations demonstrate this. The siting proposal is an important milestone in the project of the century of deep geological disposal.
Media release - Nagra proposes “Nördlich Lägern” as the site for Switzerland’s deep geological repository
Nördlich Lägern is the safest site for a deep geological repository: here, the rock deep below the surface best confines the radioactive waste for a very long time
The experiments carried out at the Grimsel Test Site and the Mont Terri Rock Laboratory provide important information for the construction of the deep geological repository and its long-term safety. These experiments are conducted in close collaboration with organisations from other countries.
We are particularly proud of our Grimsel Test Site. One of a kind: the only place in the world where scientists can use minuscule amounts of radioactive substances to directly investigate their transport through the rock.
The Mont Terri Rock Laboratory is an underground research laboratory in Canton Jura where 22 partners from 9 nations work together. Nagra is the primary research partner. As the laboratory is constructed in the Opalinus Clay, experiments can be carried out under realistic conditions.
