Nagra to drill in Eglisau

The first deep borehole in Nördlich Lägern has been completed. Next year, it will be followed by the second borehole in the Nördlich Lägern siting region in the community of Eglisau.

Update: The sequence of the deep drillings has been adjusted. Please refer to our press release dated 23 January 2020.

After Bülach, Nagra will also drill in Eglisau. “With the deep borehole in Bülach, we investigated the southern part of the Nördlich Lägern siting region. With the Eglisau borehole, we now want to further investigate the northern part”, explains Markus Fritschi, Nagra’s Deputy CEO. The purpose of the boreholes is to complete the overall geological picture of the region. Two deep boreholes are thus now planned in each of the three potential siting regions: Bözberg 1 and 2 in Jura Ost, Bülach and Eglisau in Nördlich Lägern, and Trüllikon and Marthalen in Zürich Nordost.

The Eglisau drill site is located south of Eglisau on the old country road (Alte Landstrasse). Non-motorised traffic will have unlimited access to the road during the entire construction and operational phase. “To ensure traffic safety, we will develop appropriate measures together with the community of Eglisau”, says Fritschi. It will still be some time before the drilling rig arrives in Eglisau. The building site will be investigated in early 2020, and the drill site will be constructed thereafter. Drilling will start in the autumn of 2020 at the earliest.

Nagra has set up a hotline for questions and concerns of local residents and other interested persons. It is free and operates 24/7 (0800 437 333). In Eglisau, too, Nagra will provide a visitors’ pavilion, open days and tours of the drill site.
