Internship project: Validation of Spent Fuel Assembly models through experimental data

Share

Your tasks

Nagra, in collaboration with the Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company (SKB), is offering a summer internship focused on the characterisation of spent nuclear fuel, which is a key component for the safety of any geological repository. Simulations based on detailed irradiation history are performed to infer safety parameters. However, experimental measurements are crucial for the validation of such simulations. A set of spent nuclear fuel assemblies has been measured using three measurement devices, namely calorimetric, passive gamma and neutron measurements at the Swedish interim storage facility.

Your tasks would be:

  • To familiarise yourself with the different measurements
  • To infer important fuel properties from the different measurements
  • To compare results obtained from experiments and simulations
  • To improve understanding of any bias or deviation observed
  • To collaborate and communicate in an international environment

Your profile

  • Student of a nuclear physics or nuclear engineering program
  • Ability to solve problems independently using a structured approach and critical thinking skills
  • Motivation and willingness to learn
  • Good knowledge of a programming language (Python or C)
  • Good scientific writing skills in English
  • Experience with gamma or neutron measurements is considered a plus

We offer

Our ongoing projects at the interface between industry and fundamental research offer the unique opportunity to explore the most fascinating aspects of these two worlds. You will be working along experts on key scientific, technical and implementation topics related to the deep geological disposal of radioactive waste, under realistic conditions. You will also have the opportunity to train and/or gain additional experience with experimental measurements on spent nuclear fuel assemblies. Finally, you will have the exceptional opportunity to work with SKB and gain an international perspective on nuclear waste management.

Your application should include:

  • Your CV
  • A record of all available exam grades from the BSc. and/or MSc. programme (e.g. first semester grades)
  • A cover letter not exceeding 300 words

If you would like to work with us on the disposal of radioactive waste, please send your complete application documents by e-mail to bewerbungen@nagra.ch
