Your tasks
Nagra is offering an internship position to support the consolidation of nuclide specific dose rate conversion factors used in the radiological characterisation of waste packages. The conversion factors, which depend on properties of the waste package such as geometry and the waste matrix, are used to interlink the activity contained in a waste package and the dose rate measured on the outside. Nagra employs the factors to predict the dose rate evolution with time, for example to support transport planning, and to infer the activity of specific nuclides inside the waste package in case of missing direct activity measurements.
Your tasks would be:
- To check the dose rate conversion factors currently in use by performing state-of-the-art MCNP simulations for several different waste package configurations
- To validate the calculations by comparison of the theoretically determined dose rates with measured dose rates
- To set up an automated workflow to run MCNP simulations for varying package configurations in a batch type manner using Python
Your profile
- Ability to solve problems independently using a structured approach and critical thinking skills
- Motivation and willingness to learn
- Good scientific writing skills (in English, German is considered a plus)
- Programming skills (e.g. Python, Matlab, etc.) and experience with Git and/or MCNP software are considered a plus

You will be working along experts on key scientific, technical and implementation topics related to the deep geological disposal of radioactive waste, under realistic conditions. You will also have the opportunity to train and/or gain additional experience with the industry-standard code suite MCNP.
