Bitumen, ein Verfestigungsmaterial für radioaktive Abfälle, und seine historischen Analoga
Bitumen is used for conditioning of low- and intermediate level radioactive waste. Retention of enclosed material therefore has to be guaranteed for several hundred years. Bitumen can exhibit sufficient long-term stability, as is shown qualitatively using historical analogues of bitumen. Pitch from birch tar found in Switzerland is 5'000 years old and resin found in the caverns of Lascaux in France originates from prehistorical times 15'500 years ago.
