Our French partner organisation, Andra, is a step ahead of Switzerland:
On 16th January, Andra submitted the construction application for its deep geological repository, Cigéo, thereby reaching an important milestone.
The deep geological repository is scheduled to go into operation in 2035. The application documents include 10,000 pages of technical reports. Construction could start in France as early as 2027.
In Andra’s official statement, CEO Pierre-Marie Abadie emphasises the importance of this milestone for the safety of future generations: “Today, we show that we are assuming responsibility towards the generations of tomorrow: we cannot burden them with the radioactive waste we have produced, especially given the instability of our society.”
Nagra will submit its general licence application at the end of 2024, which will define the cornerstones of the Swiss project of the century.
