International know-how exchange

Researchers met in Montpellier (France) from 22nd to 25th October for a conference on deep geological disposal and clay materials. Representatives of Nagra also attended the event.

Around 550 experts from universities and waste management organisations attended the congress on «Clays in Natural & Engineered Barriers for Radioactive Waste Confinement». The topics included clay as a host rock for deep geological disposal and the use of clay materials as engineered barriers in a repository. The event provided a wealth of opportunities for international exchange of know-how and for discussion of investigation results and disposal concepts.

Several Nagra scientists and members of partner organisations in the Mont Terri Rock Laboratory programme also attended the event and were able to exchange their experience with investigations in the Opalinus Clay and bentonite as a barrier material with colleagues from around the world.

The conference is held every two and a half years; the next one will be in Brussels from 22nd to 26th March 2015.
